What Say You…to success…

Success. Here is a word or goal that has many meanings and what is success for one is not success for some one else. You will have to define what success is and how it is incorporated in your life and your journey. An example is the following story:

The businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow-fin tuna. The businessman complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied only a little while.

The businessman then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The businessman then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos; I have a full and busy life, señor.” 

The businessman scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats; eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor and eventually open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City where you would run your expanding enterprise.” 

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But señor, how long will this all take?” To which the businessman replied, “15-20 years.” “But what then, señor?” The businessman laughed and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.” “Millions, señor? Then what?” The businessman said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “Isn’t that what I’m doing right now?”

How to find and evaluate success:

Reflect on your beliefs. Examining the nature of your reality is a foundation for discovering your purpose in life, and only when you find a purpose will you feel a deeper meaning of life. Consider the following:

Higher power.  A meaningful life involves understanding your role in something bigger, whether it be Christianity, mother nature or the universe.

Human nature. Consider how you feel about the positive and negative aspects of human nature, and what you believe about human equality or inequality. 

Identify your purpose. Take into account your beliefs and values, then decide how you may apply those to your lifestyle in a productive and positive way.  

What are your values. You need to decide what values important to you. Values like: honor, honesty, leadership and determination are just several examples of values that you may believe in.  Define them.

Dimensions of wellness and how you might develop each in a way that will increase your feeling of purpose in life. 

Social wellness involves how you interact with people and how you relate to your community.

Spiritual wellness has to do with developing your sense of a higher power and defining your moral values. 

Intellectual wellness involves expanding your knowledge, understanding and mental ability. 

Environmental wellness has to do with how you interact to your surroundings. 

Physical wellness  encompasses your physical health and fitness. 

Emotional wellness applies to how you feel about yourself and how you handle those challenges in life. 

Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be”

Leader or A$$hole?

Are you the boss, the big cheese, the head honcho? One word…Leadership. What is it and why is being a good leader important? I am sure many of us have had bosses in the past who were and still are complete assholes. We wonder how in hell they ever made it to a management position owning the personality of a toenail and no leadership skills whatsoever. 

Actually, I can think of a person right now who had the opportunity to be a great leader. As soon as he accepted the position, he became petty and mean and his opportunity to do good things went right out the window. Once liked by his co-workers, he has lost not only his reputation but the respect from others. 

On the flip side, I have known leaders who would get right down in the trench and work as hard as any of us. Always building moral, always fair and always consistent. Good days or bad. These are the people we tend to remember and use as a benchmark. 

If you are in a leadership position, ask yourself this: “Would I like working for me?” If you are a good leader, it’s an emphatic “Yes”, but if you are one of those people who walk into your work space and have to check for booby traps, have your name written on bathroom walls or people avoid you like the plague, guess what? 

Good leadership skills are as follows, Remember them and practice. 

Here are some key leadership skills you’ll need to succeed as a leader:

  1. Lead By Example. You can’t be an aloof leader, someone that’s never around and incapable of getting your hands dirty. One of the best ways to lead is by example – pitching in where needed, lending a helping hand, and making sure that the work you do is clearly understood by your team.
  1. Passion. A leader without passion isn’t a leader. He’s a paper pusher. Or a taskmaster. Or a government employee… Passion drives a lot, and you can inspire so much in others through your own passion and enthusiasm.
  1. Be Organized. A disorganized leader isn’t leading, he’s always back pedaling. Disorganization breeds nothing but more disorganization. If you’re disorganized, your team will be too.
  1. Delegate. You can’t do everything. A great leader needs to be able to delegate effectively. The key to delegating successfully is giving employees ownership of the work you assign them.
  1. Take Responsibility. Although you’ve just delegated work and truly given your team ownership, you also have to take ownership and responsibility at all times. Your team has to know you’ll be there for them through the good and the bad times.
  1. Communicate Effectively.  Everyone knows great leaders have to be great communicators. But there are certain points of communication that many people forget. Compliments creates good moral.  7. Leadership requires courage. And honesty. Tell it like it is. Don’t sugarcoat, don’t bullshit. Don’t be a jerk either. You have to learn how to present things in an honest but balanced manner.

There are other skills needed, like listening effectively, being honest and being human, but this should suffice for now.

I Challenge You…

From the emails I have been receiving since I began this blog, I am seeing that there are many people who have come to the conclusion that something needs to change in their lives. I am talking positive, self-determination changes. Some feel they have waited long enough to live the life they have dreamed of, others want to take this journey but do not know where to begin and some are life warriors already, just waiting for that opportune moment to jump into a new challenge. 

Here is my Challenge

I challenge you to pick one goal that you have wanted to accomplish. I will do the same. Together, we will assist each other in focusing in on the steps needed, motivate each other to succeed and celebrate each others victory when we have completed this challenge. 

I will even send you a Challenge packet that will explain how to be your own life coach, a Life Coaching Wheel which you fill out that will examine the different areas of your life and will highlight clearly what goals you can set for yourself.  This is the paperwork I use personally.

So, if you are one of those who desires a new and better life, take my challenge. 

By the way, this is completely free this is not a scam. It is only a simple challenge to show you that you do have the ability to make changes successfully and the only cost to you is a positive attitude.

Wake up call…

I thought I would pass this on. It is an email I received recently and understanding that the economy is still in the toilet due to corporate greed and government incompetency, there are many people who are just scraping by financially and others that are having a difficult time keeping their heads above water.  Some have given up, yet others have not… 

“I am writing to let you know that some of the stuff you have wrote has helped me make it throgh some bad days. I have been unemployed for about 8 months now and my savings are almost gone. I do what I can to live cheaper and not spend money, but some days it is really hard. I don’t want to sound like I am whining. I just want to thank you for giving me some hope. Your stuff has helped. Thanks”

I thank you for your kind words and the realization that I need to be thankful for all those gifts I do own. I am humbled by your words and they validate my goal of giving motivation and showing others that they need to give thanks also. Remember that there is always a new day and new opportunities if you can hold your courage and continue moving forward. I wish you all the good things in life and know by your words that you are one of those life warriors I write about. Keep up the good fight and know that what you are going through is temporary. It will get better.

For those of you who have a good life, take a moment and give thanks and appreciate the fact that your life could be much worse.

Go sit on the Porch…

Picture yourself standing in a long line of people. It doesn’t matter why there is a line but it does matter where you are standing. Are you the first one in line, or are you in the middle? Maybe you see yourself standing at the back of the line. Now, compare your position in this line to where you are in life. Are you out front, setting and achieving the goals you have, or are you in the middle, fumbling around, not being able to focus in on where you want to go? Or are you at the end of the line, having given up and accepted your place in life no matter if you are happy or not.

For those who are in front, kudos to you. You have picked up the game ball and are running for the touchdown. Do not stop running. For that matter, do not stop dreaming. You have goals and you know how to reach them. Feel fortunate. You are a select few.

If you find yourself stumbling around on middle ground, you do know that you have what it takes to make that touchdown, you just do not have a focused game plan to follow. This is not a large obstacle. All you need to do is develop that game plan and you will be on your way. For now, put the ball down, take however long it takes and make that plan come into focus. Look inside yourself and become familiar with what you really want and need out of life. Write this down, read it every day, modify if you have to and then pick the ball up and haul ass down the field.

Now, for those who have given up and accepted life and what it has to offer, you have a choice to make. You can continue to accept the boring and sit back while life passes you by. It may be simple and it may be easy but I can tell you it will NOT be fulfilling and exciting. The old saying goes, “If you can’t run with the big dogs, go sit on the porch.” Find this poster and hang it on your refrigerator. This will be your life and this poster will validate that you do not have what it takes to find your dreams, let alone, reach them.

But, if you are tired of sitting on the porch, here is something you should know. No matter what you think or what people have told you, you do own what it takes to run with the big dogs. You just do not know it. You may not run as fast, but deep inside you, you have the strength, the endurance and the ability to create any dream you want and not only that, you have what it takes to reach this dream.

It is only a matter of thinking differently. We have been taught by parents, schools and society that life is full of obstacles. That life is not fair and only the strong survive. All this information has built up over the years and has replaced our natural abilities towards what is positive with negativity. Many of us wake up in the morning thinking…”I have to go to work.”, “I have to deal with my boss.” or “I hope this will be a good day and nothing crappy happens.” Starting the day off looking at all possible negative things is a damned good way to keep the day negative.

Replace those bullshit thoughts with…”It will be a good day.” or “No matter what the boss does, he does not have the power to control how I feel.” and “No matter what happens, I will keep this a good day and give it 100% of my time, energy and commitment.”

Just by changing how we look at life can be the difference between the mundane and the exciting. If you do not believe that positive thinking can create a positive attitude, please, do not take my word for it. Try it. I can guarantee that if you give it 100%, you WILL see a change for the better….if not, go sit on the porch and be a spectator.

Please…Stop the F’n Whining….

I received this email and liked it, so, I am putting it on my blog:

Let me ask you some questions:

Do you live in a place where you sit and watch your child slowly die because there is no food to fill her bloated stomach?

Do you live in a place where ignorant thugs walk into your church and shoot the congregation?

Do you live in a place where your daughter can be killed because of “honor”?

Do you live in a place where your home is bombed by the government or radical insurgents?


Then stop your damned whining. “I don’t have money for a new I-pod.” “I hate my job.” “I can’t take a vacation this year.”…”woe is me. My life sucks.”

“Think I will just go get stoned or drunk…or rob somebody because I am too much of a loser to be a real human being.”

Get the Hell over it. Stop with the self pity and begin to value what you do have.

You are NOT starving, you are NOT being persecuted, you are not confined to a miserable existence.

You have things that many other envy. You have freedom, you have food, you have the opportunity to better your life and you have the gifts of family or friends.

Granted, there are things in this country that could be improved on. Like a government that operates efficiently, or a lower crime rate, or more jobs. But overall, you DO NOT have it all that bad.

Personally, I hate listening to people whine about shit that is only important to their own self indulgence. You want a better life? Then get off your ass and make it better. Stop blaming others for your own lack of motivation and take responsibility for your own choices and actions.

You can have any type of life you want. All you have to do it work for it. You work towards that goal and you will reach it.

So, either grab onto life or shut the hell up!


Eric, I totally agree with you. This is the same sermon I have been preaching for years, but unfortunately, it flies over the heads of many people and lands out in the back forty, lost forever. The message is simple. If you do not like your life, change it. It is just that simple. Thanks for the email…Preacher

Accept it or Change it…

Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” –Life’s Little Instruction Book

I realize that I am sounding like one of those old timey preachers or a broken record, whichever the case may be, but the topic is important to those who need or want to enjoy life to it’s fullest.  This sermon/recording is about change. No matter if we want change or try to avoid change, change will happen. Nothing stays the same. Spiritually, emotionally or physically. Change is happening right now, as you sit, reading this. Some change we have little or no control over. The process of growing old can not be stopped, but the physical change and the emotional change of growing old can be tweaked. We can face our progression through time with a positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle. We cannot turn back the hands of time.

The problem lays with the fear we have for change. Something new and different. Right now, many people are living their lives, regretting about past choices and looking into the future, wishing for better outcomes. But in reality, they are living in this moment. They have become so accustomed to this looking back and wishing forward that it has become second nature and to change their lives is scary and many people will choose to live their lives this way because they carry fear inside of them.  Instead, some will simply exist, pretending they are “content” with life, while others will abuse drugs and alcohol, thinking they are living life to the fullest by numbing their bodies and minds.  And some will take the chance to improve the life they are living now.  Which one will you be? 

For those who want to live better, to wake each morning, refreshed and connected with themselves in body, mind and spirit, then begin now.

  1. Get enough restful sleep.

  2. Eat a nutritional breakfast

  3. Get some exercise, whether it is going to a gym or just talking a brisk walk.

  4. Find time to be alone and reflect. Meditation, yoga or just sit and watch the sunset.

  5. Dare to dream.

We have heard this many times from many people and still, many do not get it. Some are not ready and others are too lost. You have but one life to live and you need to live it to its full potential. Go far, take chances and live passionately.

Begin now to live your life or accept what you have now and deal with it. It is your choice.
